About Fish Welfare Initiative
Fish Welfare Initiative (FWI) is a nonprofit animal welfare organization dedicated to improving the welfare of farmed fishes in Asia. In India, we do this primarily through our main program, the Alliance for Responsible Aquaculture, which focuses on implementing welfare interventions such as improved water quality and reduced stocking densities. We also conduct research to explore new interventions and build the evidence base needed to help more fishes in the future.
How You Will Make a Difference
The Operations team ensures that our programs, people, and finances are supported by reliable processes and clear internal structures.
As Operations Associate, you’ll take ownership of day-to-day operational systems, while supporting the Operations Manager on others. Your core focus areas will include finance, admin, documentation, and recruitment and hiring processes, with opportunities to take on ownership of additional operational systems and projects as you grow in the role.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you’ll support the smooth running of FWI’s operations through the following responsibilities:
-
Maintain and execute day-to-day operational systems (finance, admin, and documentation)
-
Support hiring processes, including recruitment support, and early-stage screening
-
Keep trackers, files, and internal documentation accurate and up to date
-
Assist with process improvements and take on additional operational projects over time
Qualifications
We are looking for someone who has the following skills:
-
Extremely strong attention to detail.
-
A systems-optimization mindset (for instance, as described in this podcast).
-
Ability to manage a large workload and multiple complex, high-level projects simultaneously.
-
Ability to react coolly in stressful situations.
-
Ability to write clearly and concisely, and without mistakes.
We prefer candidates who have the following experience/attributes, although they are not strictly required:
-
Prior experience with operations work (nonprofit, startups, admin/ops, finance ops, HR ops, etc.).
-
Familiarity with operating in India.
-
Personally and professionally committed to animal advocacy and/or effective altruism.
Sometimes, we find that the best candidates are the ones who hesitate before applying. If that’s you—and you’re unsure whether you should apply—we still encourage you to apply. We value skills more than prior experience. In fact, some members of our current Operations team started at FWI with minimal formal operations experience and learned quickly on the job.
