Fish Welfare Scoping Contractor

In alignment with our mission to improve the lives of billions of farmed fish, Fish Welfare Initiative is expanding its operations to South and/or Southeast Asia. We are looking for individuals to conduct scoping research in one or more of the following countries and regions: Bangladesh, the Philippines, and Taiwan.

 

In this role you will have the opportunity to lay the groundwork for future work on fish welfare in your country. Your work will involve field research, connecting with the local animal protection movement, and collaborating with our international team.

 

The successful candidate will be tasked with completing a report similar to our Vietnam Scoping Report. The period of this contract is 2-3 months.

How You Will Make a Difference

Your primary responsibility will be to answer the question: “How promising is fish welfare work in my country?” To do this, you will be tasked with the following:

 

  • Conduct visits and note observations to fish farms, processing facilities, and wet markets.

  • Meet and build relationships with all the major local players in the animal protection movement.

  • Build relationships with other NGOs whose interests may intersect with fish welfare.

  • Research the common farmed fish species, production systems, and industry trends in your country.

  • Complete a 20-40 page report detailing your findings, in collaboration with our international team.

Who We’re Looking For

If you are a skilled generalist, good at both field and desk research, and you have a passion for animals, this may be the job for you.

Required Criteria

You must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible for this position:

  1. Written and verbal fluency in English.

  2. Strongly committed to improving the lives of animals and personally and professionally adhering to the highest ethical standards.

Ideal Criteria

Ideally you have all of the following characteristics, although we encourage you to apply even if you only have most of them:

 

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Willingness to travel in-country.

  • Experience volunteering or working in the animal protection movement.

  • Ability to maintain composure in the face of animal cruelty.

  • Research experience.

  • Proficiency in GSuite products (Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc.).

  • Excited by intense and rewarding work in a new startup.

  • Knowledgeable of and aligned with the core values of Effective Altruism.

  • Lives/ has lived in one of the target countries or regions

The Fine Print

  • Location: Remote, in one of the following countries or regions: Bangladesh, the Philippines, or Taiwan.

  • Position Status: Full-time or part-time, 2-3 month contractor. 

  • Management: You will report directly to the Director of Operations.
