Director of Country Operations

In alignment with our mission to improve the lives of billions of farmed fish, Fish Welfare Initiative is expanding its operations to Asia. We are looking for someone to lead these operations in one of the following countries and regions: India, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, or Bangladesh.


In this role you will have the opportunity to help improve the lives of potentially billions of fish. You will be at the forefront of our work in-country, and thus shape the process through which our impact is achieved.

Note that due to COVID-19, our plans have been delayed. We expect to complete this hire during the period from June to August, but further delays are possible.

How You Will Make a Difference

In this role, you will have the opportunity to help shape our in-country operations and team. Your responsibilities will include:


  • Define a clear in-country strategy, working closely with the co-founders.

  • Conduct further research and oversee investigations into the local aquaculture industry.

  • Identify sites and partners for our pilot program.

  • Build and maintain key relationships with other NGOs, government officials, academics, and industry representatives.

  • Oversee the legal incorporation of the Fish Welfare Initiative in-country branch.

  • Help identify, recruit, interview, and select new team members in-country.

  • Provide ongoing consultation to the international team about in-country work.

Who We're Looking For

If you are a skilled generalist with a passion for animals and possibly some legal and management experience, this may be the job for you.

Required Criteria

You must meet each of the following three criteria:

  1. Written and verbal fluency in English.

  2. Native to and currently living in one of the following countries or regions: India, Taiwan, Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh.

  3. Strongly committed to improving the lives of animals and personally and professionally adhering to the highest ethical standards.


Ideal Criteria

Ideally you have all of the following characteristics, although we encourage you to apply even if you only have most of them:

  • 3-5 years of experience in the animal protection movement.

  • 2-3 years of management experience.

  • Experience with legal work and/or a law degree.

  • Close connections with the government and/or industry.

  • Willingness and ability to travel with great frequency 

  • Adept at finding common ground with parties with whom you may disagree.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Proficiency in G Suite products (Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc).

  • Excited by intense and rewarding work in a new startup.

  • Knowledgeable of and aligned with the core values of Effective Altruism.

The Fine Print

  • Location: Remote, in one of the countries listed above. Ideally located in a large metropolitan area.

  • Position Status: Full-time.
